Running the Distance
Just when I think I’m peaking at my fitness routine I meet someone who’s training for the Marathon in her spare time. Come on now, what motivates this good doctor?
Dr. Lauren Licata, a surgeon at Southside Hospital, is getting ready for her first full marathon, which she so dauntingly refers to as “the big 26.2”.
“I have always been an active person. I swam during my college years, and ran during the off season. Five miles turned to 10 – which took me to my first half marathon. As soon as I committed to my first full Long Island Marathon this year I knew I needed support,” says Lauren.
Lauren (shown here at Northwell Health’s Jones Beach Theater wearing her swag) joined the Greater Running Club of Long Island’s Run Smart program. This brought her long run endurance to 20 miles a day, which she only does once a week, running on average three to six miles a day.
“My biggest motivator is that great sense of accomplishment I get when I reach my goal! I also try to make the experience the best it can be by sweating it out in brightly colored running outfits, listening to an updated playlist, and fueling my body with good snacks pre and post run.
Lauren didn’t wake up one day and decide to run 26+ miles – she dreamed, she planned, she trained, and she stayed true to herself.
“Being active is part of my life! Finding quality time with family and friends and reading a good book are super important to me too – as is healthy cooking – but ultimately all those things can fit itself into my day.”
Not everyone can run like Dr. Licata, but there are plenty of ways to feel good and do good. On May 21 Northwell Health’s Foundation will be hosting its annual Northwell Health Walk – now at four locations. Start your Sunday off right by supporting this amazing event! Can’t find a team? Join my team, Boardwalk Buddies at Jones Beach. We’ll have fun – with no running involved!
All proceeds from the Northwell Health Walk will benefit women of all ages at Katz Institute for Women’s Health and improve the quality of life for our youngest patients at Cohen Children’s Medical Center.
