What to Expect During an Annual Exam

Posted by: Sally Ann Lake

Your visit will most likely start with paperwork regarding your insurance and health history, followed with a check on your weight and height to gauge your Body Mass Index. The nurse will also take your blood pressure.

The next 20 to 30 minutes  is your time with your physician. It’s your annual opportunity to ask questions and speak openly about your health concerns.

I’m not sleeping well… I’ve gained weight… I have difficulty catching my breath… all could just be common complaints due to a poor exercise routine, but maybe not. Depending on your age, now is the time to be transparent about your general lifestyle, including your medication, tobacco and alcohol use.

Your physician will spend time recommending follow up, perhaps writing you prescriptions for blood work, and addition screenings.

If your visit is overdue, you’ll have complete blood work done (be sure to use a Northwell Health lab to save). If you’re registered on FollowMyHealth you’ll be able to see your results sooner than later.

He took care of my Mother as she dealt with these hard times. He cared for her as a patient and as a family member of dying patients. He covered all issues and concerns during these times. He continues to care for her, at 93. He is caring and responsive to her… Read more »
