Just Breathe

Posted by: Sally Ann Lake

Going, going, gone!

Sometimes we don’t allow ourselves the opportunity for a simple regroup at the end of each day. From work, to school, to the gym, to cooking, to caring for our families, the end of the day can happen so quickly we just end up in bed – exhausted.

“We can all learn to relax even when we’re not able to find an hour in the day to devote to a practice,”  says Melinda Nasti, Program Manager, System Chaplain Services, Wellness Lead, Northwell Health.

“Together we can create a wellness culture where we give permission to ourselves and our colleagues to incorporate moments of time to relax and renew throughout the day,” adds Melinda. Here are a few basic tips to get you thinking “relax” even at the most stressful times:

  • Allow yourself to disconnect and reset by simply shutting off your computer and phone, and maybe even the lights – even if it’s for a few moments
  • Reflect each day upon waking, as you enter your workplace, and when facing a challenging work situation – reconnect to your passion and the reason you were drawn to help heal others
  • Simply close your eyes , take a deep breath  and e-x-h-a-l-e slowly
  • At the end of the day take a moment to  feed your spirit by finding gratitude for something great that happened in your day – share your great moment with your family at dinner time
