Living Life at Northwell Health
“When I first started working in the operating room nearly 40 years ago every case was open. Gallbladders, knees, vascular, cardiac – all invasive surgeries with long hospital stays,” says Abbe Dantuono, surgical technologist for North Shore University Hospital (shown sandwiched in the middle of her friends and colleagues in both photos).
“With medical advancements spanning over four decades I now see patients with similar conditions leave here the same day, with much quicker recovery times,” adds the 2017 service award honoree, Abbe.
Abbe has seen North Shore grow from eight operating rooms to 23 in the time she has spent caring for our patients. A most memorable moment of hers was overhearing Dr. Alan Hartman tell a resident – never loose sight that under those drapes is somebody’s loved one.
“Dr. Hartman’s words stuck with me and I share them often. In addition to trusted colleagues, I met my five best friends here – we all got married, had families together – some of us even had two. They’re my soul sisters!”
In 2016 Abbe herself became the patient.
“And then it was me. I was the sick one. Everyone from environmental services, transportation, nurses, doctors, administration chipped in to deliver an amazing experience. It’s scary to get sick, but if it happens to you Northwell Health is the place to be.”
Living life at Northwell Health means every moment matters. Thank you Abbe for your 40 years of compassion and care for our patients and each other. You have helped to keep everyone safe and well!
