Eat Healthy, Live Healthy

Posted by: Dina Morgan

“Put Your Best Fork Forward” this month during National Nutrition Month®. “By focusing on one small change at a time in your eating habits, you will make progress to reaching healthier eating goals,” says Michelle Milgrim, Registered Dietitian and Manager in Employee Wellness.

Here are 4 simple weekly tips to help you make healthy choices one forkful at a time:

Week 1: Try a new recipe. Northwell’s own Fusion Burger (recipe below), is a reduced fat burger that tastes good and is good for you.  Try making it with meat raised without hormones or antibiotics.

Week 2: Eliminate one unhealthy eating habit for seven days and substitute it with a healthy alternative.  If you give up sugary drinks, for example, experiment with increasing your water intake while infusing it with berries or lemon for a subtle hint of sweetness.

Week 3: Expand your palate and your culinary expertise. Eat a new fruit or vegetable at least three times this week. For example, have you ever tried a watermelon radish? It’s beautiful and nutrient-packed.

Week 4: Increase your physical activity. Join the American Adventures wellness challenge (registration opens on March 6) and get more steps in your routine for better health. Register and participate at northwell.edu/myWellness.

Throughout National Nutrition Month, stop by and talk to a Registered Dietitian on Wellness Wednesday for more healthy eating tips and information.
