Truly Compassionate for 20 Years

Posted by: Sally Ann Lake

Josephine Flink didn’t just wake up one day and say I want to be a nurse – it came to her through a series of signs, and at age 43 she began her 20 year career at what was then Franklin Hospital.

“In 1993 I entered Molloy College’s Nursing Program. Just three months in school I was diagnosed with a brain aneurysm. I believe my survival of surgery and completion of nursing school was a result of a divine intervention — and that there was my plan for life! I consider nursing to be a calling and not just a career,” say Josephine, a registered nurse on the telemetry unit at LIJ Valley Stream.

When Josephine first joined Franklin she worked on the medical/surgical unit.

“I would sometimes float to the telemetry unit. I was so impressed by the knowledge and the skillset of these nurses – and I just knew that’s what I wanted to do.”

In the telemetry unit of a hospital, patients are often in critical condition and need constant monitoring and care. Telemetry nurses use high-tech equipment to measure life signs, dispense medication, and communicate with patients.

“Working in the unit, alongside my fellow nurses has been a remarkable journey. How lucky am I to be surrounded by compassion in its fullest form.”

Josephine loves to spend her spare time with her husband of 34 years, Charles Henry Flink, pictured in banner above.

“Charles has been a professional pianist for more than 45 years and we enjoy evenings and events with our circle of musician friends.  Charles also volunteers at LIJ Valley Stream, playing a portable keyboard and bringing joy and compassion room by room.”

Josephine Flink lives our promise everyday. Caring for others through innovation and technology to better the lives of our patients and fulfill that desire to make things better is what she is all about. Along with many other dedicated caregivers who celebrate their service this year, Josephine inspires all of us to turn tomorrow into a breathtaking opportunity day by day, year by year, and decade by decade.

Say congrats to Josephine on her 20 years of service at Northwell Health!
